Scarring.
Dhaka. Dr Tessa Ward examines a recuperating smallpox patient in an infectious disease hospital. The pocks left depigmented scars when the patient's skin was dark. The legions on the feet remained as hard, dark scabs.
Smallpox scars and the date of the patient's disease gave smallpox eradication programme epidemiologists an estimate of when smallpox had last been prevalent in an area.
