In Feb 1975, the Bangladeshi government declared smallpox to be a national emergency. Numerous WHO staff and consultants were urgently recruited from all over the world. The membership of the 'Bangladesh Bifurcated Needle Club' indicates the international nature of the SEP, with 27 different nationalities working with Bangladeshis towards a common goal.
