Rahima Banu, a 3-year-old girl from Bhola Island, was the last case of smallpox in Asia and last naturally occurring case in the world of variola major, the more virulent form of the disease. Her illness began on 16 October, approximately 3 weeks before this picture was taken. The depigmented areas of her skin are sites where lesions were present.
