Search teams travelled from village to village and house to house, enumerating residents and ensuring that all residents and visitors were vaccinated. Smallpox patients were isolated until the rash had gone and they were no longer infectious (about 2 weeks after the rash began). They were isolated in their homes whenever possible. Guards vaccinated all visitors and ensured that food, water, and firewood were delivered. Smallpox isolation camps or hospitals were set up where cases were numerous.
