India

Crowded train and track-side houses. Smallpox did spread on crowded trains when journeys were long and patients became ill en route. In India, long journeys were common as work was often found only many miles from the family home or village. It was traditional on many religious days that an extended family reunite for its observance. Closely-spaced groups of small houses also promoted the spread of smallpox.
