August. Planning meeting at the beginning of the smallpox eradication programme in Ethiopia in 1971. Initiation of the programme was delayed in large part because of the extensive costly commitment to malaria eradication. The government was advised by the US malaria program adviser and his national counterpart to refuse to discuss smallpox eradication with WHO.
