For more information, see: How It Was: The Global Smallpox Eradication Programme in Reminiscences of its Participants [Engl transl] (Marennikova SS (ed), Novosibirsk, TSERIS, 2011). This book describes the contributions of the USSR to WHO's smallpox eradication program, including high-quality vaccine and laboratory research. Doctors participating as epidemiologists describe field operations and experiences.
In 1971, an outbreak of 10 cases with 3 deaths occurred in Aralsk, Kazakhstan. Although investigated by the Soviet government, the outbreak was not disclosed to WHO until 2003. Its source remains undetermined but may have been a biological weapons facility.
