Note on nomenclature: The British Isles is a geographical term comprising Britain and Ireland, the Isle of Man, the Channel Islands, the Hebrides, Orkneys, Shetland, and numerous smaller islands. Great Britain is a political term that included England and Wales from 1536 and Scotland from 1707. When Ireland was added to Great Britain in 1801, the term United Kingdom was introduced. The Republic of Ireland left the United Kingdom in 1922, and United Kingdom currently refers to England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales.
The United Kingdom eliminated endemic variola major in the early 1900s and variola minor about 1934. However, importations and outbreaks occurred almost annually into the 1960s. One final tragic outbreak occurred in a research laboratory in 1978, after naturally-ocurring smallpox had been eradicated world-wide.
