Summary and Regional Information

CDC (then the Communicable Disease Center) conducted smallpox eradication/measles control programs funded by USAID in all of the countries listed except Equatorial Guinea.

For more information on the origin of the CDC/USAID West Africa program, see Smallpox and its Eradication, chapter 17.

The US Communicable Disease Center (CDC, now the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) conducted a smallpox eradication/measles control program in Western and Central Africa. It began late in 1966, concluding in 1972, and was funded by the US Agency for International Development. The program was coordinated with WHO’s eradication programme through its Regional Office for Africa (AFRO).
